Sandnes is a vigorous and fast-growing municipality in the county of Rogaland, and it is the ninth largest municipality and the eighth biggest city in Norway. Its geographic location is right at the heart of the Stavanger region as well as the Northern Jæren, and has good communication in all directions by road, railway, sea or air. The railway line between Stavanger and Oslo also stops at The Sandnes Station in the city centre. Sandnes is traditionally known as an industrial city, but it is also one of the largest agricultural municipalities in Rogaland. Sandnes is the only Norwegian city that is a member of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network, and has also been awarded the status as a The Cycle City. Sandnes participates in Cities of the Future, which is a national initiative to develop cities with as little pollution as possible and a good urban environment. The goal is to reduce energy consumption and pollution by 20% by the year 2020.
The Sandnes municipality encompasses large natural areas which invite you to a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as cycling, hiking, swimming, fishing etc. Maps of hiking- and bicycle routes are also available, as well as an interactive bicycle map.
